Another thing to consider is to stay in Alexandria away from the metro. We live in Alexandria, we aren't walking distance to Metro but it is a $15-20 Uber ride to downtown. The Metro has gone up in price quite a bit so you will probably be paying $5-6 per person per trip anyway, so you might as well go by Uber instead.
