You're assuming that aggressive defense would have won us more games.
Which games would the defense have won? We were in the games against Utah, Utah St., Fresno St., and UMass because of the coaching strategy. We might have been blown out by all four if we play too aggressively. And may be lose to either UNLV or Hawaii.
