Anytime I coach a rec sport, I will always come to the game with my substitution schedule prepared ahead of time. Obviously, it often has to be changed up if kids don't show up without any letting me know ahead of time, but it is the best way to ensure you get everyone equal playing time, while also managing a strategy for who to sit out at the same time.
