There are ways to deal with the regressive nature of a consumption tax
I don't love everything about the FairTax but it has some decent proposals. Personally, I would still tie FICA to income since it is inherently tied to your income since you will be drawing on it in the future based on how much you made. I don't love the pre-bate proposal but I could plug my nose and deal with it if it would change the crazy tax system that we have now.
