There are many reasons to affiliate with a conference. The WCC affiliation has helped build stronger inter-faith relationships with Catholics and the Church of Christ (Pepperdine) and Methodists (UOP). I doubt the brethern would trade those improved relationships for a few more angry, drunken fans in the stands when BYU plays in Laramie (the double AA seats about 15,000 but drawing less than 5,000). Culturally BYU fits much better in the WCC than it did in the MWC where Mormons were ridiculed at virtually every away football and basketball game. As we saw recently in Spokane, WCC teams takes steps to remind their fans to be civil to all, despite differences and that it is bad manners to wear outfits mocking another religion.
If Utah and TCU had stayed in the MWC with Boise St. joining, then that would keep my interest. But, frankly, the MWC is no longer the premier G5 conference, that distinction goes to the AAC. Why pine away for a watered down MWC that hasn't had a basketball team finish in the top 25 in 3 years, while the WCC is getting 2 top 25 teams a year and the Zags played for the national title last season. The top of the WCC is better than the top of the MWC and the brass in the WCC has tons more class.
