I think you're leaving out a couple of factors:
- Define modest salary. He could be making well over $200K per year even in a middling Euro league. More than that (a lot more) in the big leagues.
- It's not odd at all that a young couple without kids would want to go live in Europe for a few years. Like...not at all odd.
- Fear of injury. If you know you only have 3-4 more years left in your knees--or if you are worried about getting hurt, then you would be dumb not try and make some money while you can.
- The me, me, me - What does this even mean? He graduated, earned a degree, now he wants to go make money. Isn't that what you did?
