It's not a total no-brainer if they are thinking long-term
some wives would probably want their husbands to get a free year of graduate education and earn that additional degree to start a long-term lucrative career in a field that is sustainable. It looks better on the resume to have more education/experience. The basketball career will eventually be over and he'll have to start a career in something else. It might be harder to transition in your 30s.

On the other hand, if the salary is really six figures he might be able to save a lot and fund the retirement account or save enough to pay for the graduate education after a few years. Living in Europe would be very cool for a young couple.
