I don't know the English court rules, but in America when you ask to treat a
witness a hostile it means you're the one who called them to the stand and you want to ask leading questions to them. Ordinarily, you don't get to ask leading questions to a witness you call to the stand. So the term "hostile" doesn't really mean "not on my side."
