I own 2 memory care facilities
Our staff are trained that the "reality" of someone suffering from dementia might be an obvious delusion, but they have to go along with it unless it places someone in harm's way. For example, it's not uncommon for a resident to say, "I've got to get all of these little kids home so that I can clean the house." A caregiver will then open a door and tell the kids it's time to go home. The resident will be super appreciative and will typically move on to another topic soon thereafter. Contrast that to attempting to reason with the same resident- insisting that there are no children in the facility, etc. and the situation can quite quickly escalate.
