True. The one thing I'd say otherwise is that I'm not so sure we know what we have at this point with BYU QBs, because I think it's extremely difficult to base the future on what we saw under Detmer. It was just that bad. I just don't really care much what happened under him. Frankly, Jeff Grimes doesn't either.

It's not like Mangum has never had anything though. Against a top 10 Missouri D he played pretty well, and was basically running for his life the whole game. Also had a huge completion called back. He himself was playing quite well. If guys could catch that game and the OL could block, he's probably got over 300 and 2 TDs.
USU had the #35 D and he had a 177 rating.

I think the point is that people hope a half decent coach can bring back some of the confidence he had coming in. Part of why he did well was because they let him be a gunslinger. Taysom and Tanner played horribly scared the last two years.

I don't think anyone is looking for a star, but there's reason to hope that there's still more to Mangum than what we saw under a complete failure of an offensive staff.

I've also said I don't believe he was fully healthy at all. You could easily tell. You don't go from multiple sources saying they watch you over the summer and say your arm looks better than ever, to looking like you have the arm strength of broken-back Nelson against Boise State where he could barely throw it 10 yds. The zip and power was totally shot. He wasn't himself.

I don't know if we'll get that back, but I'd like to see what a healthy Tanner could do under someone who has a clue how to be a successful college coach.
