They need to stop and come up with a long overarching story to tell over many movies. It's what they should have done
When they first bought the franchise. VII-IX should have been planned out before they started filming TFA. Instead they've been rushing films which have led to production issues with storylines and directors.
They aren't sure where they want to go but they do know there are some things they do know they want to do, but not until after they've seen what it was.
They need to come up with a comprehensive plan.
They've done it with the books. But it needs to be done with the movies as well.

This is one of the most perplexing aspect of Disney Star Wars. They seem to just be winging it and have no story arc

True. More blame should be on Kathleen Kennedy for not having a story arc ready. Too bad they couldn’t have Marvel’s guy
