I didn't really care much for sports before that because I didn't understand how they were played and didn't have much of an interest in learning how they worked for some reason. But I had 1) a BYU grad dad who always watched the games, so I was exposed to the team and the school and wanted to go to BYU when college came, and 2) a friend who was a huge OU fan, and he talked casually about how they'd be playing BYU. I thought I might as well watch the game so I could chat with him about it after, my dad taught me how football worked as we watched the game, and I learned once I knew better what was going on I could appreciate it and enjoy it. Somehow even with my limited background in sports I understood enough about rankings to know it was significant that we were staying close, and excitement mounted throughout the game as we were watching. When it finished as a win I was thrilled, and hooked.
