The financial ignorance betrayed by everyone using this $2 billion argument is
pathetic, hilarious, and disappointing...depending on how much that individual should know. I assure you the Church did not "spend" $2 billion on a shopping mall. It's a lie that needs to die but won't because those at odds with the Church love to play on ignorance.

The Church might have fronted billions to make it happen, but they quickly got a lot of that back. Did they give those condos away? No, they were sold at prices rivaling the most expensive real estate in the state. Same with the leases on the office space. Some of the retail spots might have been incentivized with sweetheart deals necessary to kickstart a successful shopping environment, but it was pennies relative to the size of the project.

I do not know whether the Church made any money on City Creek. They bought dilapidated real estate that was becoming an eyesore to next to its most important visitors center. Most of the construction occurred during an economic downturn when tradesmen were desperate for work. They saw a problem and fixed it when government leaders were unable or unwilling to do so. As far as I'm concerned they should receive nothing but praise for City Creek mall.
