They have a similar situation this year....
although they got a commitment from a qb, the kid from AZ. He is a mission first kid however which means that they don't have a QB commitment for this class since he won't be showing up until 2021. They do have offers, and one commitment, from a couple of Utah qb's, the kid from Herriman HS who is being moved to TE and the kid from Orem HS who is not a college level QB so I think his offer is as an athlete.

They always seem to have more qb's than they should and I think it is because of missions. Most schools would like to sign one qb every year but with missions it seems like BYU winds up with multiple qb's coming in some years. This year for instance both Wilson and Hall came in, Wilson as a true freshman and Hall as a mission freshman. It's kind of a mix of poor planning and also kids changing mission plans on them. I'm not sure that they'll ever get a handle on it because of the missions. I am sure when they can get a recruit they feel is a top level QB and also have a previous QB recruit coming back off of a mission the same year they are going to still take the new recruit and just let it play itself out.

QB recruits need to take that into account when making their decisions about signing with BYU because it seems there is always a big cluster of QB's there and that makes it difficult.
