The athletic scholarship is worth approximately 80k per year so multiplied by 5 years it is about 400k whereas the BYU scholarship is somewhere around 80k. But that is in actual dollars.

But yes BYU is a much better deal, but I think we all know that. BYU is incredibly cheap to attend for an LDS kid.

The actual dollar value closes somewhat if the comparison changed to a non LDS kid on an athletic scholarship at BYU to a hawaii resident kid on an athletic scholarship at UH. That’s why for my son in particular the UH athletic scholarship is worth so much more in actual dollars than a BYU scholarship. Is do not know all of the numbers but the equations would be something like that.

For instance a non Member kid on an athletic scholarship at BYU has more actual dollar value in his scholarship than an LDS kid does on an athletic scholarship because the tuition is cheaper for the LDS kid. The same thing applies to the UH atketic scholarship because a resident of Hawaii pays lower tuition than a non resident.

That said BYU is less expensive than Hawaii anyway, BYU is always ranked very high in value for its degrees because tuition is so cheap, for LDS kids and non LDS even though non members do cost more than members.

So when the dollar value of a scholarship is figured it is based on the tuition that the athlete would pay as a member/non member at BYU and as a resident/non resident at UH.

Also not every degree at BYU is a better degree than every degree at UH, on average they probably are but not every single one individually. For example my son wants to major in business and one of the business degrees at UH is an international focused business degree with some Asian specific focus to it and that degree in particular from UH is highly valued and sought after by employers. The other thing he is interested in is some sort of IT stuff, maybe an IT engineering degree of some sort and my understanding is UH has some pretty highly ranked degrees in those fields as well.
