BYU has rarely had a top tier program. It gets a Jimmer or Ainge every few decades. (Broken clock is correct twice a day.) Saying it's not a talent problem because we recruit some three and four star high school players is like saying that we MUST be great if we get ranked in a preseason poll.

Is anyone pretending that we've got NBA draft quality candidates on our roster? How many alumni do we have in the NBA? Currently zero and only 5 drafted since 2000, all of whom were like Jimmer and Davies; there today, Europe and China tomorrow.

How many does Gonzaga have? Four currently playing and 14 since 2000.

We can be competitive with the also rans and worry that our team will leave early to go play in Europe. If that's the measure of our talent and ambition, we're quite successful. But if you want to be a frequent top 20, you can't find all the building blocks in your own backyard.
