Why do care at all?
This whole discussion is hilarious. Are you or someone you know trying to get in the program? Were you rejected from a different program due to a similar situation?
First of all, BYU doesn’t care if ANY of the Cougarboard members have a problem. It is their program and they set their own rules and exceptions. Second, being a college athlete with a degree, is a unique applicant and is a legitimate contender for an opening because of his or her credentials. Being offered a football or basketball scholarship at a well-known university sets that individual apart from others and they are in an elite class of athletes.
Regardless of your personal feelings, out of all those who play high school football, how many are offered the opportunity to play on scholarship at USC each year? That places him in a very unique circumstances, especially where he is then asked to come join a BYU team and has the potential to add the university’s premiere athletic program and money maker. How many non-athletes can put that type of potential on their application, in addition to his or her undergrad degree?
BYUtv is linked to ESPN due to the contract and because BYUtv has allowed their equipment to be leased out for other games. Getting in that communication program coupd be a big deal for an athlete that wants to work for ESPN as an intern or entry level job after his football career is over. He is smart to choose that program if that is the field he is looking into as a non football career. How many schools have the type of close connection that BYU has?
As fans, it baffles me that anyone is questioning BYU’s decision to allow his entry when the church is using Pathways and other ways to help more people get into the BYU system of schools. Give the kid a break and be happy for him.
