When I tried the Sony's I could hear the ANC sounds and it was distracting.

They were comfortable physically but hearing that sound was uncomfortable audibly.

Bose. QC15 or newer. You can get very good quality used Bose headphones on Amazon or Ebay.

I've had the 1000xm3 and QC35. 1000xm3 is the clear winner.

Another vote for Bose QC35s. You won't beat them for NC or comfort.
