If it was me, I'd cut out a section of drywall and install a board between the
two closest joists. Then I'd fix the drywall and repaint, then attach whatever I'm hanging to the board I installed.

Is the cover of the light over the hardware larger than 9" in diameter? How large a hole could you conceal?
