I wanted to do something similar with a projector and people convinced me to put
in backing. You really, really don't want to depend on just drywall to ceiling mount something like that.

This is the correct move. Mount a 2X4 between the joists and attach the light to it.

In that case, do what Mizzou recommended. A drywall patch is simple.

Is the cover of the light over the hardware larger than 9" in diameter? How large a hole could you conceal?

You could do a 12" cut out and place a couple of cantilevers above and set a backing
