the missing puzzle piece
You could do a 12" cut out and place a couple of cantilevers above and set a backing
for your cut out repair. Then drill through the ceiling and thread some wires off your cantilevers to hang the rail. Not all in that order, but you get the gist.

This is the correct move. Mount a 2X4 between the joists and attach the light to it.

In that case, do what Mizzou recommended. A drywall patch is simple.

Another option is a decorative board big enough to span two joists.

Is the cover of the light over the hardware larger than 9" in diameter? How large a hole could you conceal?
