I think this all comes down to an evaluation of what "being hard on you" means.
My absolute worst boss seemed like she had multiple personalities. She'd be super friendly, ask me about my kids and family, and then tell at me and tell me she was going to fire me if I didn't get this checklist done in the next 4 weeks - followed by asking if I wanted to go to lunch.

I get that I was not a perfect employee. But some of the stuff that got me written up or on corrective action was just silly.

Stuff like - we had a contract and were doing work for a client. The client told me what they wanted. She agreed that I should do what the client wanted. And six months later she put me on corrective action for carrying out the actions that the client wanted instead of doing what she thought I should do - which was opposite of what the client wanted. And it wasn't that she told me to start doing it first - I went right from "yeah, do what the client wants" to "I'm putting you on corrective action for not doing X, Y, and Z".

I put up with it for WAY too long - several years. There were times I was certain I was going to be fired within the next week or so. I lost sleep. Heck, I lost hair. I know I some issues with depression off and on - nothing clinical, but I sure felt beat into submission.

I liked the company I worked for, but I hated my job. Because my job meant working for her. I mean - the elements of the job were OK. But part of it was working for her. I think there are a lot of jobs someone can love if they're working for the right person. When I worked for the state I was doing one of the hardest jobs I know of - but I loved my supervisor and my co-workers. And it kept me going in spite of the rough job at times. Honestly - I'd rather love my supervisor and not love my job than love my job and not love my supervisor.
