Not sure if CougarBoard is the right place for career advice, but here it is...

I call upon the collective wisdom of CougarBoard. Excluding TNT and ALUF1990 (no offense).

I have a good shot at a job in a West Coast city. Currently living in Utah. I was actually raised there.

My wife didn't take this opportunity seriously, but as things become more 'real', she's panicking.

If I did get the job, I'd have to move back in with my parents. No way we could afford to buy a house in California. However, that to me is actually a good thing, despite being middle age and living in my old room;

  • My parents are old, but not feeble (yet). They dont see my kids much, and this makes me sad. I don't remember my grandparents at all. They died when I was young, and I feel like this is a chance to prevent that happening again with the next generation. My dad might actually call my kids by their names, not their cousins' names.
  • My parents live in a big house, bigger than yours. So is their yard, and the adjoining acre of weeds. They can't keep it up by themselves anymore. Not only would they not be alone, but I'd be happy to help with upkeep.
  • Schools in the pretentious neighborhood are amazing, duh. Better than the charter school we have our kids in now.
  • Drive to work would be 15-12min. That's with traffic. Beats the 35min WITHOUT traffic I face now on the I-15.
  • Beach. 10min from the beach. Wife hates the snow and we dont ski or snowboard. But everyone can enjoy sand.
  • The job is management. First 'real' management job, not just 'Assistant Manager to the Regional Manager' job.
  • Worst part is, I'm in a dead-end position in a dead-end industry. This job not only pays $20K better but is jump to a new industry. No MBA or MPA, or other schooling needed.
  • The parent company is massive, with several sites, foundations, auxiliary services, and locations. Resources a-plenty, opportunities, and networking. Yeah I know all six people in Utah who do similar work to me... that's not a good pool to work with. PS, the city itself has other institutions with similar positions.
  • Members of the Church are few and far between. Like I said, I was raised here and feel that my testimony was always better off for being tested from youth.

I'm having a hard time not putting on the rose colored glasses. So here is my best cons list;

  • My mom is still my mom, and treats me like I'm in the 6th grade... despite being three times that age.
  • My old neighborhood is hoity toity and extremely superficial. Wife would not enjoy that atmosphere, and kids might struggle.
  • Everything is so friggin' expensive
  • The future boss is some what incompetent
  • I may have (just a tiny bit) applied, accepted and then declined this position before… that’s a long story
  • The benefits are somewhat not as good as my current set-up
  • I have a deep seeded fear of passive aggressive hostility towards Mormons. Yes, that developed when I grew up in CA
  • The job, by itself, is not very demanding, challenging, or rewarding. I'd like to think the associations and new 'cool kid' crowd would make up for that, but who knows.

Anyways, please let me know what things I’m not thinking of, and what I am overthinking. Thanks
