I'd didn't say to pat him on the head and say "it's no big deal". Not at all.
But taking a hard-line response is usually going to do more damage to a 9 year old - even one with a devilish streak - than it will do good.
And as a parent I've learned that leaning on the side of mercy and kindness instead of harsh justice is always the better bet. Discipline doesn't only come through a heavy hand and a smack across the butt.
