My grandfather was a replacement officer with the South Saskatchewan Regiment.

He joined the regiment in France in September. The SSR landed in France to help with the battles to take Caen after D-Day. The SSR had been part of the raid on Dieppe and my grandfather served with several vets of that raid.

My dad attended a reunion of the regiment and got his copy of the regimental history signed by Col C.C. Merritt who received the Victoria Cross for his daring leadership at Dieppe.
