I can see how people can just laugh some of the stuff off, but there’s a couple things that contributed to people having a pretty significant reaction, and I think they are both justifiable
1) The anti-LDS crowd in Utah can and does constantly belittle and attack LDS beliefs and members, particularly the devout BYU types. It’s a little tough to just laugh stuff off when it’s in your face all the time
2) Remove the double standard, and we could all laugh a little more. When you know good and well that an LDS kid could say something really similar about another religion and it would absolutely cause a media firestorm, but you’re constantly supposed to laugh it off and not be so sensitive when people do the same thing to you, it gets old fast
We all need to take ourselves less seriously, fine. We all need to be sensitive to that which is sacred to others, fine. We get to pick and choose who gets made fun of and what is absolutely outrageous/offensive/justified rationale for ruining people over....not so fine with that.
