Time of possession is important in its ability to drain the opposing defense, and indirectly affect score. Score is

always most important. Everything else just contributes to it.

The offense will get the ball in their hands just as many times as the opponent. When the defense stands, regardless of how long it takes, the offense has their chance. Every time.

If you give up 1000 yards and zero points, you still win. If you give up 50 points and zero yards you still lose.
