My 14 year old nephew spent a week with us this summer.
He did the same last summer. Last year we had a blast with him here. He’s my sons age and all my sons friends think he’s the bomb.

Anyway this year was a totally different experience. He was here for a week but not present. We took him to some amazing places but he was never really there. I started timing how long he would go in between looking at his phone.

45 seconds was his max. Meals sacrament boating, fishing. He couldn’t go 1 minute without turning on his phone checking something and then holstering the thing like a gun slinger. He wouldn’t swim this year. When all the other kids went he said he missed his mom and needed to talk to her. I knew she was at work. He was just constantly checking to see if any of his posts had likes.

He was literally a phone Zombie. Breaks my heart. Then at weeks end we got together with his family. Spent the evening with them. They were there, but not present either. Constantly checking phones and posting on social media. The one weekend a year we got to spend with them and they couldn’t break away. They did find time to mention that my nephew had developed some anxiety in the past year. By the way the previous year when he was my stud nephew and everyone just loved him, he hadn’t yet got the phone.
