It’s arguable (and granted my oldest is 6) that because the kids future
Is at stake that’s exactly why they should go to BYU. Even with top tier talent, so few 4* kids go beyond college. If the gospel, finding a spouse, and other non-football items are more important maybe you would encourage your kids to go even with a “lesser” staff.
I don’t know that for sure and as you say I think it’s personal and each kid/family mate have a different answer for them. But I can see the merit in pushing for a kid to go to BYU.

yep. easy for people to claim that BYU is first choice no matter what when your kids don't even play sports
