I was accepted to both and chose USU for a couple reasons.
One, I went “tunnel singing” in high school at the request of a girl and was emotionally scarred😉.
The far bigger reason though was that my GPA/ACT combo got me a Presidential scholarship to USU and nothing but admission to BYU. When combined with feeing more at home in Logan than Provo and the academic prestige of the school being mostly irrelevant to my future career of choice, I went to Logan.
I knew many other kids at USU that could have gone to BYU. I also knew a lot (like my wife) that were only in Logan because they didn’t get in to BYU.

For USU it isn't anti-LDS bias. It's 3 decades of watching BYU have all the limelight meanwhile the Aggies sunk into
