It's possible that the AAC plays Hawaii and ESPN sends BYU elsewhere
But, not likely. BYU v. Hawaii is a good game and the AAC will not fulfill all of its bowl contracts if their champion plays in the Cotton Bowl. Plus, it's looking likely that the SEC is not able to fill all of its bowl contracts, if it has multiple teams in the CFP and New Year's Six bowl games. So, the AAC could step into an SEC spot, like the Liberty or Texas bowl.
So, BYU v. Hawaii helps ESPN get some nice bowl matchups to maximize TV ratings and attendance.
