- Tuiaki's defense in 2016 and 2019 have been excellent at getting turnovers.
- Throughout his four years, his defense has also been somewhere between above average to quite good at limiting explosive plays (based on the ppp metric).
- The defensive efficiency is mediocre
- The defensive performance in the red zone is mediocre as well, suggesting the "bend don't break" style of play has more break in it than some care to admit
- Tuiaki's defense has been bad at the field position battle
I feel like that is a fair break down of Tuiaki's defense as someone who has watched almost every game, that the stats match the eye test. My biggest complaint about Tuiaki's defense is that overall I find his playcalling quite passive and repetitive regardless of opponent, offensive style, match up, down & distance situation, etc. His defense works fine against inferior opponents or equal/superior opponents who don't take BYU seriously. However, against opponents who take BYU seriously, particularly equal/superior opponents, his defense performs ineffectively and has a "death by a thousand cuts" vibe to it.
