The Autumn Classic brings in money, but that's beside the point.
XC program has two coaches, a Director of Ops, an athletic trainer, an office admin, and a couple of student employees When the team travels, regularly only the first four go and the number of athletes is normally no more than ten per gender. When traveling to recruit, the coaches can drive to local athletes' homes.

From a material standpoint, the XC team uses the indoor track and outdoor grass fields, which both have small maintenance costs.

Saving that little cost, which is heavily subsidized by the Autumn Classic and donations to the Athletics department, provides what additional material benefit to FB? FB's budget is orders or magnitude larger than the XC budget and cutting the one would provide little benefit to the other.
