BYU is indeed comparable to middle P5 schools, except that they have access to
the NY6 by virtue of being in the P5, while we have disqualified ourselves from ever participating in that echelon of competition by deciding we’re too “good” for the G5, which is the only avenue open to us for achieving it.

If we aren’t good enough to compete for a Natty, which we aren’t, then the next best thing to strive for is the NY6. Thus joining the G5, since we have nearly zero chance of ever getting in as an Indy.
