I also root for Cal and go on their boards quite often. They could frankly care less about a national championship. It's nowhere close to their radar. Never even brought up--ever. Their pie in the sky objective is the Rose Bowl, but they are happy as long as the team is progressing toward that goal, much like it has the last couple of years. They really don't even see Alabama and Clemson as competing in the same sport. I think that perspective is shared by a lot of mid to lower level p5 teams.
A lot of BYU fans seem to have winning a national championship as the main objective, which seems odd given the fact that it is pretty much impossible for any program outside of a handful of football factories to realistically pull off. I'm not sure how that's really a healthy expectation for a program such as BYU's.
