If colleges could pay athletes, would it reduce the lack of parity somewhat?
I know it sounds counterintuitive because big programs have more money - but stick with me.
No single school could afford to pay as many elite athletes as Alabama and OSU have on roster now. Five star athletes would get bids from all kinds of schools and Alabama couldn't afford to pay top dollar for all of them. (As it is now they only have to cover tuition, housing, and look the other way while boosters drop off the occasional paper bag of chump change.)
4 and 5 star athletes would be in a seller's market and could command top dollar.
Others would be in a buyer's market and would probably get little more than tuition and housing like they do now.
