mrphotogenic is right. I must have conflated the two games in my memory...
...at some point in the last 43 years.

It looks like the Matheney put back *after* the buzzer was in the 1976 Utah at BYU game and the punch to Cheesman's nose mask was 3 minutes into the 1977 Utah at BYU game and Matheney was ejected.

From SeattleUte... http://www.cougarstadium.com/showthread.php?2990-Utah-v-BYU-memories

Here are two of my favorite memories; this upcoming game brings them to mind. 1977. The Utes need to win their last game in Provo to clinch a title in Arizona and Arizona State's last year in the conference. (I'm on the bench as the Utes' manager, a freshman.) Arizona is a game behind them. Three minutes into the game, Utah's great center Buster Matheney busts Jay Cheesman right in his broken nose with his fist (Cheesman was already wearing a bandage and a mask!). Matheney ejected.

I still remember the exchange between coach Pimm and the ref:

Pimm: "You've got to be kidding. Cheesman hit him first."

Ref: "Nope, he's gone."

The MC goes absolutely bananas and BYU promptly goes up by double figures. Little used Coby Leavitt replaces Matheney and has the game of his life; gets a double double and Utah rallies and wins going away. On the last play Cheesman goes up for a layup and Leavitt blocks it into the stands.

***And this from Deseret News article about Matheney at the time of Matheney's death...

He once took a swing at BYU's Jay Cheesman, who was already wearing headgear to protect a broken nose. Matheney's contention was that he was responding to a cheap shot by Cheesman. But BYU players and fans felt the only cheap shot was delivered by Matheney.

...and...

The most memorable play of his career came in 1976 against BYU. Judkins put up a baseline jump-shot that bounced off the rim with seconds remaining. Matheney tipped the ball in at the buzzer, giving the Utes a 76-74 win.

The play ignited a raging controversy. Paul James, the BYU announcer, replayed the shot on TV several times, saying it proved the tip-in was after the final horn. Bill Marcroft, the Utes' announcer, parried by showing the replay and stating it proved the shot was good.

Judkins, now the director of basketball operations at BYU, still gets asked about that play. "It was good. No doubt about it," he says.

I didn't go to many BYU games in those days since I was in high school and my dad didn't have season tickets (he did in 1972 and 1973), but somehow I remember clearly being in the MC for both of those incidents. (I must've been there for both)
