Flattening the curve does not remove the curve
People will still get sick and die... it just may take them longer. So although keeping the hospitals from being overwhelmed is good and will save lives, it will not reduce the fatalities caused by COVID-19 itself.
The only way actual lives are saved is if a vaccine is produced, but since that is likely at least a year away from production and world-wide distribution I don't see that happening.
