you have to understand the damage that would be caused if we took no measures and just allowed millions to die (our hospitals and ventilators would be gone (used) and many young adults would die. Our economy would enter a tailspin that would take years and years to recover from.

What we are doing could easily save a million lives. Can we do it for 6 months? Of course not. But there is a reason every country in the world is doing it.
