Bad interpretation, and incomplete data
The flu season was already ongoing and the flu surveillance reports from the CDC showed cases that were grouped into strains through genetic testing.
The change in cases with flu-like symptoms didn’t occur until week six where people going to the doctor for flu symptoms increased. It might have been here a couple weeks earlier in small numbers given the date of the first US death, but a trended line graph isn’t proof.
