It isn't so that we don't all get the virus, it's so we don't all get the virus at the same time. The virus clearly is very, very, very (read impossible) to control, so we really aren't going to achieve that. I think it became so politicized, and such an emotionally-charged issue because of the media's coverage (dire headlines, highlighting exceptional cases, Italy's storm of cases, daily death counts, etc. -imagine if we did that for ILIs every year?!) Public health officials and politicians basically have no choice but to make these generalized quarantining policies that are going to torpedo the economy, and cause even more suffering.
