And I like playing the role of contrarian.
I do wish more people would celebrate the real purpose of Memorial Day. But really what are they supposed to do if they don’t have family members buried near by that died in combat or served in the military? They can think about the sacrifice of those who have died, protecting our freedoms. They can put out flags, etc. But in terms of actually celebrating the holiday, there’s not a lot that people actively do. But it naturally draws thoughts of loved ones who have passed that may not have served. And it seems like a great excuse to head to the cemetery to pay respects. I see no harm in that, even if that’s not the purpose of the holiday. If nothing else, they’ll see the flags on the headstones of all the other people buried in the same cemetery and it helps remind them of the sacrifices of those who came before us.
