If it were about travel, then the Utes wouldn't be dropping BYU.

I think it's more in line with the second part of your post (health and safety guideline uniformity) and what Scratch said about flexibility.

Less games = less exposure. Conference games are more meaningful. Also keeps the TV money in house.
