Or support to provide caregivers at home or look at an assisted living for both of them.

Before a nursing home, I’d look at a board and care with a live in caregiver. If he doesnt have nursing/medical needs, he probably doesn’t need a nursing home. The problem is usually people don’t have support for the other options and the government pays for a nursing home even if it’s not the most appropriate place. Nursing homes aren’t bad per se, you just want the right care at the right time. It’s kind like who who want to live in a hospital if you didn’t need to be there.

In California, Most institution type places are isolating so no activities/Visitors. Kind of boring and most people would want to stay home if they could. I don’t know what it’s like at their city.
