My older son was all about football, baseball, basketball. Younger son, not so much.
I pushed him to play up through about 8th grade, but by then it was clear he had no desire and didn't really enjoy it. It was tough for me to swallow because he had so much talent and speed.
My older son has cerebral palsy but still played baseball and football all through high school and did really well. If I could have combined the natural talent of my younger boy with my older son's heart, drive, and commitment, man... what an athlete he could have been.
A dozen years later my perspective is very different. I wish I'd have encouraged my kids to pursue their own interests more, rather than trying to push them into the sports I loved as a kid. Not that I didn't support them, but I could have done more.
