My only pause would be him saying "doesn't want to work that hard again and not
play".
Not saying this is the case but it could be better for him to persevere in working hard to get playing time. The hard work could be very good for his character.
But I'm also a big proponent of kids making their own decisions (within reason), I'm just bringing up the above as something to ponder.
