it's so much cheaper than steel), but that "clang" you get when you hit steel is so much more satisfying than peering at the target trying to decide whether or not you can see the hole you just put in it. 🙂
Once you master a consistently smooth trigger press, you can move back a bit and practice shooting your handgun at steel from various platforms (standing, walking, kneeling, prone, supine) and from various kinds of cover (simulated by a barrel or sheet of plywood or whatever makes sense in your situation). Then handguns are a lot more fun to shoot.
But I totally agree that just standing at the range and putting holes in a paper target isn't all that enjoyable.
