You don't need to be Independent to play three power conference teams. The only reason to go Independent is to play more. And there's no way recruits are going to think of you as a P5 because you've got 3 P5s on your schedule every year. By the numbers, BYU's recruiting has actually gotten worse in Independence compared to the late MWC days.
