Late to this discussion but the MLB umps definitely had it right there
I don't even think the intent discussion was relevant. The baserunner is not protected unless it's an infield fly situation. The batter shouldn't have been a complete lazy butt. That's why infield fly rule isn't in place if only first is occupied (if the batter puts effort into running to first, it eliminates the incentive for the fielder to intentionally drop the fly).
