What are you saying the intent of the infield fly rule is?
The intent, in my mind, of the infield fly rule is to not allow the defense an unfair advantage. However, in the situation being discussed, the defense absolutely gains an advantage.
But that’s the rule, so that’s fine. But it would make sense to allow the runner to legally stay at first base until the batter arrives.
